Before you redeem
A key is a one-time code that unlocks a game or item on one specific platform. A Steam key only works on Steam and a PlayStation code only works on PlayStation, so check which platform the giveaway is for before you claim. On DealDie, the platform badge on each listing tells you.
Redeem keys yourself, on the platform's own app or website. Nobody legitimate needs your password to redeem a code for you. Menu names change from time to time when apps are updated, but the options below have been stable for years.
PC stores
Each PC store has its own redeem option:
- Steam: in the Steam client, use Activate a Product on Steam, found under the Games menu or the Add a Game button at the bottom of your library. You can also redeem from the account section of the Steam website.
- Epic Games Store: open your account menu on the Epic website or in the launcher and choose Redeem Code.
- GOG: use the redeem page on gog.com while signed in, or the redeem option in GOG Galaxy.
- Ubisoft Connect and the EA app: both have an activate or redeem code option in the main menu of their launchers.
Consoles
Console codes can usually be redeemed on the console or from a browser:
- Xbox: open the Microsoft Store on your console or PC and choose Redeem, or use Microsoft's redeem website while signed in to the same account you play on.
- PlayStation: in the PlayStation Store, open the menu and choose Redeem Code, or redeem from your profile on the PlayStation Store website.
- Nintendo Switch: open the Nintendo eShop, select your account, and choose the option to redeem a code.
Mobile
On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, and look for the redeem code option under payments. On iPhone and iPad, open the App Store, tap your account, and choose to redeem a gift card or code. Many mobile loot codes are redeemed inside the game itself instead, so check the giveaway's instructions first.
When a key does not work
Most problems come down to one of these causes:
- Already used: someone else redeemed it first, or you already redeemed it. Check your library or transaction history.
- Wrong platform: a Steam key will not work on Epic and a console code will not work on PC.
- Region locked: some keys only work in certain countries.
- Typo: copy and paste the code instead of typing it, since O and 0 or I and 1 are easy to mix up.
- Expired: some codes must be redeemed by a deadline, even after you have claimed them.
Keep a record
If a giveaway emails you a key, keep that email until the key is redeemed and the game appears in your library. If anything goes wrong, the giveaway page or publisher support will usually ask for it.
